A VICTORIAN woman has died after plunging 60 metres down the spectacular Mitchell Falls waterfall in the far north of WA.

Police said the 37-year-old Victorian tourist died after falling down Big Mertens Falls near the spectacular Mitchell Falls in the Mitchell River National Park, one of the iconic tourist attractions in the Kimberley.

The woman is believed to have slipped and fallen to her death into a pool below the falls.

A paramedic was at the scene and the woman was declared dead at the scene.

The accident happened about 10.30am yesterday and the woman's husband was with her before she fell.

Police were notified at 11.25am and flew to the scene.

It is understood rescue workers were unable to retrieve the woman's body yesterday due to the remote, rugged location.

However her body has now been removed.

Pearl diver dies off WA coast

Monday, 16/04/2012
The pearl industry is in shock after the death of a 22-year-old diver who was working off the Western Australian coast, south of Broome, over the weekend.
The Victorian man was in a team of six diving for pearl shells off the 80 Mile Beach.
Police say he surfaced in a distressed state and died not long after.
Executive officer of the Pearl Producers Association, Brett McCallum, says it's not yet known what caused the death, the first of an Australian pearl diver in 24 years.
"We haven't had any incident since 1988, so we would argue that our diving is very safe," he said.
"It's early days yet as to exactly what the cause of this loss of life is and we'll be doing everything we can to find out what happened, and hopefully if there's anything we can implement and improve, we will certainly do so."
